Become a Lifeguard
Becoming an iconic Australian Lifeguard you are nearly always the envy of your friends and family as you spend your work hours on some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
A number of Lifeguards are full time employees – Lifeguarding all year round – and some are casual or contract Lifeguards, employed during busier holiday periods such as the Christmas holidays.
Lifeguards must also be prepared to uphold the values of the ALS and present a professional, helpful and courteous front to the public. The ALS Lifeguard recruitment and application process has been designed to enable the ALS to consider an applicant’s ability to meet the requirements for employment. The process includes a number of stages: See the Recruitment Process page for more information (ALS website).
As part of a world-leading organisation, our Lifeguards must demonstrate high levels of fitness, excellent rescue and people skills, and great professionalism. All Lifeguards will be over 17 years of age and as a minimum have the following qualifications:
- Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)
- Provide First Aid
- Provide Advanced Resuscitation
- Spinal Management
- Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue
- Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management
Don't have some of these qualifications? Check out our public courses here.
See the Lifeguard Qualifications page on the ALS website for more information.
