Ballina Beaches Remain Closed

Beaches across Ballina Shire will remain closed for the next 24 hours after a surfer had a reported encounter with a shark at Lennox Head.

Surf Life Saving and Lifeguard assets including inflatable rescue boats, jet skis and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter will continue to sweep the area under the direction of the NSW Police.

The surfer was reportedly knocked off his board by a shark shortly before 9am AEST and was not injured in the incident.

The species of the shark involved in today’s incident has not yet been confirmed by the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).

Competition in a junior surfing contest at Lennox Head hosted and organised by council and local organisers has been suspended for the day.

Australian Lifeguard NSW Manager Brent Manieri said that all assets will continue to monitor the situation as required.

“Beaches across Ballina Shire have been closed for another 24 hours under the direction of NSW Police,” Mr Manieri said.

“The decision on when to reopen beaches will be made by NSW Police in consultation with all stakeholders including Council, SLS and DPI, but we will not do that until it is safe to do so.”
