Byron Bay Hangs On To Title at Country Champs
Reigning title holder Byron Bay has managed to claim top country club again at the 2013 Stramit Country Surf Life Saving Championships at South West Rocks.
Strong performances by the large team of competitors including State Team representative Josh Brown and Zoe and Ela Heiniger in the water area, ensured the club’s success.
Second in the pointscore was far north coast club Cudgen Headland, improving admirably on last year’s fourth placing. Solid racing from Josh Jones, Tom Swift, Luke Chaffer, Scott McCartney and Jarrad Cain contributed to the overall result.
Coffs Harbour SLSC had consistent results across both water and beach events, helping to claw its way back into third place overall at the conclusion of the Championships.
This was the fourth and final year for the event to be hosted by South West Rocks SLSC. In 2014 and 2015 the Championships move south to Mollymook.
Surf Life Saving NSW Surf Sports Manager, Dan Pearce, says the South West Rocks club, local community and the Kempsey Shire Council have all been great supporters of the event over the last four years.
“For a small club, the team of volunteers from South West Rocks has done an amazing job staging an event of this size,” said Pearce. “The thousands of competitors and their families have had a fantastic time up here and it will be sad to leave. The council has also gone all out to assist wherever possible and overall I think it’s been great for the local community and the region.”
