Byron Holds Narrow Lead After Country Champs Day 2

Defending champions Byron Bay have surged into the lead in the club point-score after a highly entertaining second day of the NSW Country Championships.

Crisp blue sky, but also extremely warm conditions greeted the competitors at Mollymook on the second day of the 2015 Stramit NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships.

The picture-perfect scene lasted throughout the day as entrants young and old battled for points on both the beach and in the water.

Friday’s leaders Cudgen Headland currently sit in third position, and will be looking to keep the pressure on the two front-runners with another strong performance on Sunday. Warilla Barrack Point enjoyed a highly successful day as they find themselves in second position and within striking distance of Byron Bay.

Host’s Mollymook are relishing the home-beach advantage sitting very comfortably in fourth position.

One of Mollymook’s standout performers today was Stirling Norwood who won three gold and a silver in the U10 age group.

Ben Carberry took out the open ironman, but was pushed hard by clubmate Kalani Starling who was racing in the U19s division which was held concurrently.

“It was really good conditions out there, and a very hard flat race. It was a good chance to have a race and build up some fitness ahead of the carnivals coming up later in the season, Carberry said.

Shaun Sewell from Byron Bay had a highly successful day in the water taking out the U19 Male Ski, 2nd Open Ski, 1st in Open Ski relay, 2nd in U19 Board Rescue and 1st in U19 Ski Relay.

“It’s great to be here, and it’s a short course which is really good. It’s great that our nippers have performed really well throughout the first two days, and hopefully our seniors can finish it off and bring it home.”

The 2015 Stramit NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships will conclude tomorrow Sunday 18 January where competition gets underway at 7.45am.
