Caves Beach Take Out State Title

Caves Beach SLSC is the 2013 NSW Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) State Champions.

Twenty clubs from around the state descended on Fingal Beach at Port Stephens over the weekend and in another dominant display, Caves Beach SLSC notched a record breaking 10th State Championship title.

Caves Beach SLSC finished 18 points clear of the nearest rival Kiama Downs SLSC. South Maroubra SLSC had the most division wins of any club with five but were unable to get enough points overall and finished in third.

Caves Beach and Kiama Downs SLSCs had four division wins apiece while Thirroul SLSC (two) and Terrigal SLSC (one) were the other two clubs to win events.

SLSNSW Surf Sports Manager, Dan Pearce, says the event was a great success.

“The weekend of IRB racing at Fingal Bay saw some extremely close finishes and a few surprise results. Conditions on Saturday were very challenging with strong winds and cold conditions but the Port Stephens area turned it on for finals day with perfect weather and challenging surf. All competitors enjoyed the solid competition before the final rounds of the Premiership Series at Newport in two weeks’ time.

“Fingal Bay SLSC were fantastic hosts in providing a brilliant location for the State Championships. Thanks must also go to the hard working volunteer officials and water safety personnel who worked tirelessly throughout the duration of the weekend,” said Dan Pearce.

The IRB racing calendar will now turn its attention to the final rounds of the Surf Life Saving NSW IRB Premiership Series. Rounds three and four of the Premiership will be held on 22-23 June at Newport Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
