Isobel has just completed 9 years of Nippers and is now in the U15’s. She has her SRC and is now training for her Bronze Medallion. Louise felt if you can’t beat them join them and became a Bronze at 47 years.
What is your best clubbie memory? Definitely travelling as a family for the Beach to Bush program!
Why do you volunteer as lifesavers? We love helping our community.
Why are you so passionate about the Surf Life Saving NSW Beach to Bush program?
The loss of any life on any beach is heart breaking. To be able to be part of a SLSNSW initiative to keep kids safe when they holiday on the coast is our way of helping to educate and hopefully save lives. We love being able to travel to country NSW. Visiting these communities we get to learn about each town and its flavour and industries in more depth than we would as a visitor. It’s fun to interact with the country people who are often a little puzzled to see the red and yellow. It’s an intensely busy time but we are able to encourage and support each other along the way. And the bottom line is the faces of the kids as they become part of the presentation. You just can’t beat it!
Who is someone you admire in the Surf Life Saving movement and why? Ocean Beach’s Katie Dixon our Director of Lifesaving. Katie is passionate about lifesaving and is an inspiration to the members of Ocean Beach. She is a great role model for the youth of our club. She trains them in First Aid, Champion Lifesaver and Patrol Competition. Katie was selected as Australian Lifesaver of the Year.
What are your goals within Surf Life Saving and for Ocean Beach? Peter coaches Junior R&R and believes the skills learnt in this discipline help create great young lifesavers. Isobel helps train R&R and competes in R&R and Lifesaving Competitions. She would like to become a coach. Louise’s focus is training while on patrol. She looks after the Rookies, new and junior lifesavers. She has started to compete in masters events.
Our goal for OB is to help protect the lives of our beach community and to encourage and support new lifesavers.
What have you gained from being involved in Surf Life Saving as a family? Surf Lifesaving is one of the few organisations where a family can be involved on an equal level. Each of us has developed strengths, knowledge and fitness. Working together in a team environment is a great bonding experience.
