Coastal Ambassadors Program Visit Ballina

Ballina Lighthouse and Lismore SLSC is thrilled to have been selected as the Far North Coast Surf Club to host the Coastal Ambassadors Program.

Surf Club members, their family, friends and the local community are being invited to participate in the Program at Ballina for the first time on the North Coast.

"We all love and enjoy the Ballina coastline so this is an opportunity to learn more about coastal processes and impacts as well as the marine biodiversity of Ballina's beaches," said Club Member, Robyn Simmonds.

"The program aims to encourage surf club members to extend their knowledge of the beach environment as well as promote conservation activities amongst the wider community," added Simmonds.

The award-winning program, originally created by Pittwater Council, is being extended this year to other NSW coastal regions thanks to support from the NSW Environmental Trust.

Pittwater Mayor Jacqui Townsend said the Coastal Ambassadors program was started by the Council’s Coastal Environment Centre in 2005.

Event coordinator Sonja Elwood says surf club members in the Ballina region are invited to come and learn more about their coastal environment.

“The session at Ballina will offer a snapshot of the more extended Pittwater’s Coastal Ambassadors program which normally runs over a six week period,” said Ms Elwood.

Ms Elwood said the session which includes light refreshments is suitable for all family members connected to local surf clubs in the Ballina region.

“Our hope is that participants will feel motivated to share the conservation message with other members of their club and the wider beach-going community.”

Mayor Townsend said since its inception in 2005 Pittwater Council had trained 115 Coastal Ambassadors and the program has the backing and support of Surf Life Saving, community groups such as Eco Divers and the Surfrider Foundation and the NSW Environmental Trust.

The Coastal Ambassadors session will take place on Sunday 8 September from 2pm and fits well with other Club activities including information and registration sessions to be held at the Club in the morning.
