Coogee Clubbie Named Top Assessor
Craig Howie’s ongoing commitment to not only his club but to the Branch as a whole has seen him rewarded the title of Assessor of the Year at the 2015 NSW Awards of Excellence in Sydney on Saturday.
In the 2014/15 season, he attended every Bronze Medallion and SRC Assessment course throughout the Randwick District a not inconsiderable achievement given the time commitment involved, and also assisted in the development of a series of pre-proficiency workshops that effectively allows people to refresh their skills and knowledge ahead of their assessment.
He utilised his skills out assessing once again when he acted as a judge for the Champion Lifesaver event at Coogee in February and At short notice, he also agreed to be Assessor in Charge at the Gold Medallion Assessment at North Cronulla in March this year, his first such assessment.
Another highlight for Craig this year is his participation in a review of Coogee’s proficiency procedure. The purpose of this review was to examine way to reduce the burden on assessors and increase the value of proficiency sessions to club members.
“This award was totally unexpected, and I’m so proud to be part of the education team at Coogee and in the Sydney Branch as we take it very seriously,” Mr Howie said.
“I’m delighted that myself and my partner Beck (Trainer of the Year Beck Mister) were able to win as it’s obviously something very special.
"I just really enjoy the challenges of assessing. To help people achieve their goals whether it be their Bronze Medallion or whatever their dream is something I take a lot of pride in.”
The 2015 SLSNSW Awards of Excellence are proudly presented by Stramit Building Products. Almost 350 of Surf Life Saving’s most outstanding lifesavers, athletes, educators, coaches, and administrators from around the state gathered at Sydney’s iconic Four Seasons Hotel for a night of celebration.
