Country Champs Athlete Profile: Cooper Schubert
With the 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships just around the corner, SLSNSW takes a look at some of those hoping to make their mark on the event.
They say experience is the best teacher of all, and Cooper Schubert of South West Rocks SLSC is certainly gaining plenty of that. January’s Country Championships will be his third appearance at the event where he will contest the U10 Swim and Board.
The youngster has positive memories of Mollymook beach where he took out a bronze medal in the swim in 2014. He hopes to once again be on the podium, and is hopeful that his club will be able to enter more team events.
Name: Cooper Schubert
Club: South West Rocks SLSC
Age Group: Under 10s
Events you are planning to contest: Under 10s swim, Under 10s board
Previous appearances or results at Country Champs or other major events: At the 2014 Championships held in Mollymook, I won a bronze medal in the Under 9s Swim event. In 2012 I got Silver in the Under 8 Wade. I have also achieved various 1st and 2nd places at Mid North Coast Branch carnivals.
How long have you been involved in surf lifesaving?
I began nippers in the Under 6s so I have been involved in surf lifesaving for around 4 years.
What do you enjoy most about being a member of a surf lifesaving club?
I love the friendships made at both nippers and with kids from other clubs at carnivals. I also love the lifestyle as my whole family are involved in our surf lifesaving club, patrolling our beach.
How has your training been going for the Country Championships?
I have been working hard for the swim event at the Kempsey pool with Tony and Heather Hudson. I am also trying to get tips for the board from the older kids in our club. My great mate Finn Askew gives me some good advice during our board sessions.
What are your goals for the Championships and the rest of the season?
I would love to make the final in the swim, and then go on to pick up another medal. I also want to get a better start in the board and improve my overall position from last year. Although mostly I just want to have a great time and enjoy my events.
Do you have any pre-event superstitions or preparations?
Not really, I am just happy that this year I know what to expect. Last year was the first time at Mollymook so I was worried it was going to be really cold in the water.
What are you most looking forward to about Country Championships?
I love the whole carnival, and this year there are more competitors from our club going so hopefully we can enter into some team events this time. Plus we get to have a holiday!
Are there any surf athletes you admire or have found to be an inspiration and why?
I love watching all the competitors in the Nutri-Grain Iron man series but my favourite is Ky Hurst.
The 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships will be held at Mollymook Beach on Jan 16-18.
