Country Champs Athlete Profile: Holly Abbey
With the 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships just around the corner, SLSNSW takes a look at some of those hoping to make their mark on the event. Holly Abbey is already building an impressive resume on the beach notching up State and Country wins in 2014.
The talented youngster is an all-round sportswoman, and has shown great dedication to travel to events from her Canberra base. She is hoping to compete on both the beach and water at the Country Championships, and build up her form to defend her title.

How long have you been involved in surf lifesaving?
I have been involved since U6s, but have watched my older sister Amy do it since I could crawl. As we live 2 plus hours away in Canberra, we travel on weekends to attend Nippers at Nowra-Culburra.
What do you enjoy most about being a member of a surf lifesaving club?
I really enjoy being able to do things I love with friends who love it too.
How has your training been going for the Country Championships?
My beach training has been going well. My Coach Sean Hendry has been putting me through technique and strength sessions for the past 12 months and I have seen a big improvement. I also train on the track under the guidance of Matt Beckenham and Melissa Breen for the past three years. I train 2-3 times a week with Mel and Matty where we train distances, sprints, throws and jumps.
What are your goals for the Championships and the rest of the season?
I would really love to defend my title in the beach sprints at State and would like to make the finals for flags. I am also keen to get in the water at Country and make finals for both board and swim.
Do you have any pre-event superstitions or preparations?
I like to drink lots of water, ‘slip slop slap’, and have a good night’s rest before competition starts. I also listen to music on the drive to the carnivals and eat chocolate custard and bananas between events.
What are you most looking forward to about Country Championships?
Catching up with friends from other clubs and competing in relays with other Nowra-Culburra nippers. I am also looking forward to doing water events at Country and hope the program will allow me to do both.
Are there any surf athletes you admire or have found to be an inspiration and why?
Kirsty Higgison is amazing because she competes just because she loves it. Now she is doing really well and competing in the Nutri-Grain Ironwoman series. She always trains hard and was my sister’s Age Manager when she was at Nowra Culburra which was great. Kirsty is a great role model because she teaches you to always keep doing what you love and that every event is another experience.
The 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships will be held at Mollymook Beach on Jan 16-18.
