Country Champs Athlete Profile: Luke Chaffer

With the 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships just around the corner, SLSNSW takes a look at some of those hoping to make their mark on the event.

Luke Chaffer from Cudgen Headland is almost an old-hand at the Country Championships having attended the event on many occasions over the years.

It’s been a hectic couple of months for the youngster after being named in both the NSW Country and NSW State teams, and he is very much looking forward to getting to Mollymook and testing himself against the best that Country can offer.

Name: Luke Chaffer
Club: Cudgen Headland
Age Group: U17s
Events you are planning to contest: Board, ski, ironman, and swim
Previous appearances or results at Country Champs or other major events: I’ve lost count, but I’ve been competing at them since I was around 8 years old. They’re always a great event to attend.

How long have you been involved in surf lifesaving?

I first joined up when I was 6 years old.

What do you enjoy most about being a member of a surf lifesaving club?

Growing up near a beach it’s always been a part of my life as I spend a lot of time there. It’s always great to meet new friends, and there’s a lot of good people at the club.

How has your training been going for the Country Championships?

It’s been going really well. I’ve been training twice a day at the moment with Scott McCartney, and I’m feeling really fit, and very much looking forward to racing and seeing where I am at.

What are your goals for the Championships and the rest of the season?

I would love to be able to win the open board race at the country title! It’s just a great opportunity to race and see where I am at this time of the year. Anytime you finish on the podium is always a good experience, and I’m hopeful of getting those finishes. It’s also great preparation for the State and national titles which will be held later in the season.

Do you have any pre-event superstitions or preparations?

Not really – I try to stay relaxed and not take it too seriously. I do enjoy catching a couple of waves in the morning before a competition.

What are you most looking forward to about Country Championships?

Just catching up with friends from other clubs and getting the chance to do some racing. In one of the relay events there’s hopefully going to be another team from our club so I’m sure there will be some rivalry there.

Are there any surf athletes you admire or have found to be an inspiration and why?

He’s not a surf athlete, but an athlete I find inspirational is Ben Roethlisberger who is the Quarterback at the Pittsburgh Steelers. I think there’s a lot to like about the way he goes about his work.

The 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships will be held at Mollymook Beach on Jan 16-18.
