Country Champs Countdown: 3 Days To Go

The wait is almost over for the nearly 1200 athletes, parents, supporters and officials who will make the journey to Mollymook for the 2015 Stramit NSW Country Surf Life Saving Championships.

Competition begins on Friday for one of the most keenly anticipated events on the calendar for Country Surf Sport athletes.

The Stramit NSW Country Championships is the only event on the surf sport calendar to feature a full range of events including surfboats, as well as all age groups from U8s through to Masters, within a three-day surf carnival.

It’s the second straight year that Mollymook has held the carnival with organisers expecting it to be a keenly fought competition.

“It’s shaping up to be a fantastic event at Mollymook, and we are delighted with the amount of community support that we have had,” Surf Sports Manager Shane Knight said.

“The economic benefit that an event of this magnitude brings to a region is quite significant, and we wish all competitors the best of luck.”

Luke Chaffer from Cudgen Headland has had a hectic couple of months where he has been named in both the NSW Country and NSW State Interbranch team.

Despite the travel he says he loves competing at the Country Championships because it’s a great opportunity for everyone to come together for some friendly competition.

“I’ve been training twice a day at the moment with Scott McCartney, and I’m feeling really fit, and very much looking forward to racing and seeing where I am at,” Chaffer said.

“In one of the relay events there’s hopefully going to be another team from our club competing so I’m sure there will be a bit of friendly rivalry – it’s going to be a great event.”

Holly Abbey from Nowra-Culburra SLSC will be competing in the U12 age group, and hopes to defend the beach sprint title she won in 2014.

“My beach training has been going well with my Coach Sean Hendry has been putting me through technique and strength sessions for the past 12 months, and I have seen a big improvement,” Abbey said.

The youngster who travels from Canberra to train and compete said she loves the social side of the Championships.

“I’m looking forward to catching up with friends from other clubs and competing in the relays with other Nowra-Culburra nippers.”

The 2015 Stramit NSW Country Championships will be held at Mollymook SLSC from January 16-18.
