Elouera Crowned Pool Rescue Champs
In a fiercely contested battle between Central Coast and Sydney clubs at the annual State Pool Rescue Championships, it was the southerners who came out on top with Elouera being crowned champion club after downing defending champions Terrigal.
Almost 300 competitors aged from 12 to 60 contested a variety of events throughout the two-day championship at Woy Woy’s Peninsula Leisure Centre on the NSW Central Coast, with clubs from as far as Byron Bay and Nowra represented.
Three Sydney clubs (Elouera, North Cronulla, and Wanda) and two Central Coast clubs (Umina and Terrigal) made the top five in the overall point-score.
Pool Rescue is a highly technical sport, and is an opportunity for both patrolling lifesavers, and those who are approaching their senior nipper years to hone their skills over the colder months.
There were a number of strong performances across the weekend with Elouera consistently scoring points, particularly in the relays to storm home for the win.
Individually Umina’s Jemma Smith and Lachlan Braddish performed strongly to help the host club to second place. Byron Bay’s Ela Heiniger won several events, while master’s competitors Paul Lemon (Terrigal) and Laura Thurtell (Forster) also turned out a strong performance.
NSW Surf Sports Coordinator Rob Pidgeon praised the standard of competition.
“The NSW Pool Rescue Championships are always a hotly contested event, and this year was no exception. We saw some excellent competition over the championships and I would like to congratulate all competitors for what was a fantastic event,” Mr Pidgeon said.
“Congratulations to Elouera for taking out the club point-score, and a special thanks to the Peninsula Leisure Centre for hosting the Championships.”
Attention will now switch to the 2015 Australian Pool Rescue Championships which will be held on the Gold Coast next month, while younger athletes will be out to impress as they seek a place in the U18 development squad to tour New Zealand later this year.
A NSW team to contest the Interstate Championships which will be held concurrently at the venue will be selected shortly.
