Encouraging Future Looms For MNC Lifesavers
They might not have won many medals, but some of the best junior surf sport athletes from across the Mid North Coast will take plenty of heart from their performances at the NSW Surf Life Saving Age Championships at Ocean Beach – Umina last week.
Taking on the best lifesavers from around NSW was a challenge for the youngsters with South West Rocks and Port Macquarie flying the flag for the branch finishing equal 36th on the overall point score just ahead of Wauchope – Bonny Hills who finished tied at 37th.
Port Macquarie’s Ty-Jesse Brabant and Jesse Hiatt teamed up to finish 5th in the final of the U12 Male Board Rescue while the U13 Female Beach Relay team also made the final.
Harry Askew (South West Rocks) became the lone medallist for the branch picking up a bronze medal in the U10 Swim event.
In the traditional Junior Rescue and Resuscitation event Mia Bales and Piper Seale (Wauchope-Bonny Hills) finished a close 4th in the final in what was an encouraging performance from the youngsters.
Surf Sports Manager Rob Pidgeon believes it was a highly successful State Championships, and that the standard of skill on display bodes well for the future of surf sports.
“I would like to congratulate everyone for what was an extremely successful State Age Championships. It was certainly played in the right spirit, and all the Nippers, their families, and their clubs can look back with pride on what has been a fantastic surf sport season,” Mr Pidgeon.
“Some of our older Nipper competitors will now go on to get their first taste of national level racing at next month’s Australian Championships while our younger ones can look forward to an exciting finish with their club season. Regardless of whatever comes next they can be all proud of their achievements,” he concluded.
The 2016 NSW Surf Life Saving Age Championships are proudly supported by ClubsNSW and will continue at Ocean Beach - Umina with the Masters Competition from Wednesday 9 March, and the Open Competition from Friday 11 March until Sunday 13 March.
