Surf Sports Season Kicks Off

On Sunday 28 October a heavy off-season of winter training will bear fruit when the NSW Endurance Championships take place at Swansea Belmont.

The NSW Endurance Championships will mark the opening of the 2012/2013 Surf Sports season with at least 300 athletes expected to compete. It is the premier NSW endurance event hosted by Surf Life Saving NSW with support from event partner, Engine Swimwear.

“The NSW Endurance Championships is a popular early season hit-out for our volunteer lifesavers. The longer distances at this event help our athletes prepare for the long summer of Surf Sports and keep our volunteer lifesavers fit and ready for patrol. The Championships see some of the state’s best athletes tackle swim, board, ski, beach run and iron person events,” said Daniel Pearce, SLSNSW Surf Sports Manager.

The Endurance Championships will provide surf club competitors from U15s through to Masters with the chance to test their skills and race against some of Australia’s best ironmen and women. The elite competitors will use the Endurance Championships as a great test of their winter training.

Jeff Mowbray, State Team Coach from Swansea Belmont SLSC, is excited about the strong contingent of athletes competing at the 2012 Endurance Championships.

“The Endurance Championships are a great hit out for the start of the season. We are hoping for lots of medals this year as our athletes use their local knowledge of the surf and the area to their advantage.

Swansea Belmont competitors Greg Tobin, Danielle Radford and Hannah Trypas are definitely ones to watch. Greg is carrying some good form from the Coolangatta Gold and Danielle and Hannah will be looking to dominate the younger age groups,” said Jeff.
