FNC Takes Out Country Pointscore at Interbranch
Far North Coast competitors have done their branch proud at the 2013 NSW Surf Life Saving Interbranch Championships, snatching the Overall Country Pointscore from South Coast rivals.
Some tough conditions at Soldiers Beach on the Central Coast tested the skills of the Branch’s top surf sports competitors and made for some very close finishes, but the Far North Coast was too strong and finished overall on 1052.
Shannon Hulbert-Green got the Far North Coast off to a flying start by taking out the first race of the carnival, the Open Female Surf Race.
“I had a pretty good start and some waves to help me in. I am just here to have fun, it is all about the team bonding and it is great to be getting back into it after having a few years off,” said Shannon.
Open Board Rescue winners Nadi Canning and Ellie Leaver were thrilled with how the team was performing by Day Two.
“Far North Coast is having its strongest year ever and we are so happy to have travelled so far and be doing so well,” said Ellie.
“The Board Rescue was a very tactical race. It is a long swim and a long paddle out there but we work well together and we just aimed for that breaking wave on the right,” said Nadine.
Up and comer, Luke Chaffer was at it again taking out the U17 Board Race and securing third in the U17 Ironperson.
“The conditions are very messy and difficult – luck is a huge factor. I had a good start on the board and that put me at an advantage and I just managed to hold them off,” said Luke.
“Interbranch is good because you’re really looking out for your teammate and seeing how you can help them during the race. It’s not a normal carnival,” he added.
The Far North Coast had many notable performances including Female Team Captain Nadi Canning taking out the Open Female Surf Ski and coming third in the Open Ironwoman while Male Team Captain Jarrad Cain was a close second in the Open Ironman.
The Far North Coast’s spirit was also evident in the team events with competitors not only winning the Open Female Board Rescue but also the Open Male Board Rescue and the U17 Taplin.
