Freshwater First-Aiders Named Top Team
It’s been a successful season for Freshwater Surf Life Saving Open First Aid team of Kelly Dobrow and Cheryl White whose undefeated campaign helped them to the Team of the Year award at the NSW Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence.
Their season began with victory at local carnivals held at North Narrabeen and Dee Why before taking out the Branch, NSW, and Australian First Aid titles.
The NSW title was their second in succession, which is a wonderful achievement for the duo, and even more impressive when you realise that it was just their third competitive season.
Keen to spread their knowledge and to encourage other aspiring First Aiders the pair mentored two rival teams this season in Queenscliff and North Narrabeen.
Win or lose the team remains gracious in defeat and humble in victory and are always happy to spread the word about the competition.
Additionally Kelly also introduced two of the club’s U15 competitors to the First Aid competition and encouraged them through their rookie season.
Both women were also involved in the writing of scenarios for the U15 and U17 events at both the Branch and State Championships and also performed officiating duties.
“It’s been a great year we have a fantastic coach in Sharon Johnson who was a finalist in Coach of the Year,” said Kelly Dobrow.
“We do a lot of training and preparation. Coming into competition season we train twice a week and we usually try to get down to the beach to do some training with our patrol and use them as our patients. It does assist the patrols as well as it helps them understand first aid,” she said.
Cheryl White too was full of praise for her coach.
“She has been so supportive of first aid in general and of the other clubs we have been coaching. This is just so exciting it’s been an unbelievable season,” she said.
