Illawarra Athletes Shine at NSW Surf Life Saving Masters Championships
The NSW Surf Life Saving Masters Championships supported by ClubsNSW and staged at Umina and Ocean beaches on the Central Coast over the weekend produced another batch of team and individual state champions aged over thirty.
Power couple Michael and Penny Locke from Bulli Surf Life Saving Club made the event a real family affair when they took out a number of events. Penny secured gold in the 40-44 Female Ironperson and Single Ski Race while Michael took out the 40-44 Male Single Ski Race.
Ocean ski paddler Michael was greeted with a round of applause from his competitors and has been preparing for the State Championships by competing in the 200km George Bass Marathon.
“I work, I have two kids and this is my third weekend in a row on the Central Coast for the State Championships. It is a great lifestyle though, very enjoyable,” said Michael.
Wife Penny said the family juggles very early starts for training and early finishes in the evenings to fit everything in.
“Michael and I compete to keep fit and have a goal to work towards. You don’t take it too seriously but it is great to work towards medalling,” said Penny.
Also from the Illawarra, Davina Strauss from Coledale made a comeback from injury when she took out the 30-34 Beach Flags and Beach Sprint.
“This is my first time competing at State level and the competition is great. I am just back from injury so I have had very little preparation. I wanted to come back gently into competition and test it out so to come away with gold is awesome,” said Davina.
