Illawarra Blitz Beach Events At Interbranch

Illawarra’s strong team of 40 athletes made their mark on the 2015 Interbranch Championships at Cape Hawke on the weekend, finishing sixth behind Country Champions Far North Coast.

The red and white were outstanding on the sand with a host of first and second place finishers in the sprint and flags from the Under 13’s to Opens.

As expected, Helensburg-Stanwell Park members made up the majority of the beach team and made light work of their opposition.

The stand out was Opens competitor Siobhan Dibley who took out both sprint and flags double, meanwhile, Blake Drysdale cleaned up in the flags and placed second in the sprint.

“I’m pretty stoked to take out the double. I haven’t had any beach sessions since Aussies when I did my hamstring so it’s amazing to get both sprint and flags,” said Siobhan Dibley.

“There are a number of new coaches in the team this year that made a few changes and we’re really close and I think it’s made a big difference with our results,” Blake Drysdale added.

Illawarra’s dominance continued in the Under 17’s with Adam Newey, Jasmine Yew and Yvette Avery finishing on the podium in both sprint and flags. Adam placed second in the flags and smashed the field in the sprint, while Jazmine won the flags and Yvette just missed out on being the sprint champion.

Surf Life Saving Illawarra Director of Surf Sports and Team Manager, Keith Caldwell, puts these fantastic results down to the great work of the clubs and their development programs.

“We’ve had a development program running for Surf Life Saving Illawarra since the start of the season, so there are kids who have and kids who haven’t made the branch team in the program. It’s helped developed them and we’re just going to take the baby steps and make our way up the food chain,” said Keith Caldwell.

Jack Bridges and Sam Zustovich finished off an outstanding Interbranch for the Illawarra being crowned flags champions in the Under 13’s and Under 14’s respectively.

Meanwhile in the water, Bulli’s Kaimana Fittock was first pass the post in the Under 14 Female Surf Race.
