Illawarra Dominate Beach Events At Interbranch
The team most at home on the sand once again dominated the beach events at the 2013 Interbranch Championships at Soldiers Beach on the Central Coast.
Renowned for their beach sprinters, the Illawarra team did not disappoint winning seven Beach Sprint and Flag events.
Four times NSW champion Blake Drysdale (Helenburgh-Stanwell Park) tore through the competition in the Opens Men’s Beach Flags and despite not making the NSW Team is banging down the door behind World Champion Jake Lynch (Newport) who was injured this weekend.
Drysdale heaped praise onto Illawarra Beach Coach Daniel Roberts for the team’s beach dominance in recent seasons.
“Our coach is an ex-Aussie Champion in the Flags and Sprint and Daniel’s knowledge and opinions go a long way in helping this team. He’s taught us to concentrate on the little things such as our technique and to put strong emphasis on our starts.
“We’ve been training together for three to four months now which really helps the younger ones feel their way into it. That time together really paid dividends this weekend!”
Katie Mott and Keeligh McCauley of Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC were both selected for the NSW team after a strong weekend on the beach.
Katie won the U19s Beach Sprint and finished third in the Beach Flag while Keeligh finished second in both races in the U17s.
Jayme Millard (Sandon Point) and Samuel Zustovich (Towradgi) won the U12s Beach Flags, Jazmine Yew (Thirroul) and Brock Scrivenor (Helensburgh Stanwell Park) won the U14s Beach flags while Yvette Avery (Helensburgh Stanwell Park) won the U15s Female Beach Sprint.
