IRB Premiership Champion To Be Crowned At Woonona
The final rounds of the NSW IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) Premiership will look to conclude the series and crown the champion at Woonona in the Illawarra this weekend.
Woonona SLSC will host the event over two days from 14-15 June in what is shaping up as a huge weekend of competition with round four and the rerun of round 2 of the Premiership running back-to-back.
The finals of Round 2 were postponed in Batemans Bay due to dangerous surf and have been held over for this weekend.
With a number of teams in the running for the title including defending champions Kiama Downs SLSC, 2013 NSW Champions Caves Beach SLSC, South Maroubra SLSC, Catherine Hill Bay SLSC and North Cronulla SLSC, the Premiership Series is set to conclude in exciting fashion.
After a closely fought series thus far, SLSNSW Surf Sports Manager Shane Knight, says anticipation is high for the final rounds.
“We’re certainly looking forward to a fantastic weekend of racing at Woonona to conclude this year’s Premiership.
“With a number of clubs in the running to take out the Premiership Title, two consecutive days of racing at Woonona will certainly test the skills and endurance of the athletes,” said Mr Knight.
With 261 athletes from 21 different Surf Clubs including local clubs Woonona, Thirroul and Wollongong City the final round of the Premiership Series is set to be a significant event for the Illawarra region.
Destination Wollongong General Manager Mark Sleigh said they are proud to be supporting the NSW IRB Premiership.
“With an abundance of hotel options, attractions, restaurants and cafes, Wollongong is the perfect destination for major events such as this. We look forward to welcoming the travelling teams and supporting the local teams that help to keep our beaches safe” Mr Sleigh said.
