It’s Official Sydney Director Caps Busy Year

Sydney Director of Surf Sports Wayne Druery has barely had time to draw breath during a busy summer that culminated in him being awarded the title of Official of the Year.

He officiated at Branch, State, and Australian level this season, and was appointed to the position of head referee for the State Age Championships at Umina where he was instrumental in reshaping the format and implemented a new program of events.

He also introduced a qualifying process for the Ironperson and Board Rescue Events, with the post-event feedback extremely positive.

“Refereeing at the NSW Championships was a great experience. Years and years of work go into those types of carnivals but I loved it. I’d like to thank my good mate, Stephan Marley because if it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here,” said Wayne Druery.

Last September he travelled to New Zealand as a team manager for the Pool Rescue Development Tour, and has been heavily involved with Surf Life Saving Australia as member of the Surf Sports Technical Committee.

In August 2015 Wayne implemented a new long distance ski paddling event in the Cronulla area in conjunction with Paddle NSW. He held the position of Race Director and the race was an overwhelming success in its inaugural year with over 130 paddlers.

The accolades keep coming and he was recently selected as a Referee for the Kelloggs Nutri Grain Series 2016/17 season, but his mind remains very much on the long game.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of the Nutri Grain Series. I only found out recently it’s live TV which puts a whole new aspect on it.

I said when I first became an Official 10 years ago that I’d love to referee The Aussies and that’s my ultimate goal and if I got there it would be like winning a gold medal for me,” he concluded.

The 2016 SLSNSW Awards of Excellence are proudly presented by Stramit Building Products. Over 350 of Surf Life Saving’s most outstanding lifesavers, athletes, educators, coaches, and administrators from around NSW gathered at Sydney’s iconic Four Seasons Hotel for a night of celebration.
