Kiama Downs Ready to Defend State Title
Round 1 of the NSW IRB Premiership series kicks off this weekend at Mollymook. Defending State Champions, Kiama Downs SLSC, are the team with the target on their back.
Representing the local South Coast Branch, Kiama Downs have a difficult road ahead to repeat their 2012 efforts. This year more than 300 competitors, from about 20 clubs throughout NSW will compete in four rounds of the series in an attempt to not only take out the Premiership title, but to win a spot on the NSW IRB State Team.
Kiama Downs SLSC Team Manager, Steven Guy, is confident the club can have another strong showing.
“We had a good showing in the NSW Premiership Series and solid results at Aussies and Worlds last year, but there are a lot of high quality teams in NSW, and it is always a challenge to get results against such stiff competition. But we do have a great mix of people on our team with the more experienced members providing coaching and mentoring and the fresh blood adding youth and enthusiasm to the mix,” said Guy.
The club knows that they need to continually improve to stay ahead of other clubs including rivals such as 2011 State Champions Thirroul SLSC (Illawarra Branch) and North Cronulla SLSC who finished 3rd last year.
“For this upcoming season we have been focussing on the depth of our team. We have managed to hold the existing combinations from last year and introduce some new combinations with last year’s patients and crews being this year’s crews and drivers. The new start process (crewperson starting with the driver on the start finish line) is also something we have been working on and should add a new dimension to the sport this year.”
Kiama Downs as well as Shellharbour SLSC will be flying the flag for the South Coast Branch and will be sure to take advantage of their local knowledge of Mollymook.
“Mollymook is close to home for us and it is always good to have a carnival in our home branch. The water temperature has been fantastic the last little bit, and the weather forecast looks fine at this point, so looking forward to catching up with old friends and competitive rivals,” said Guy.
