Lemmon’s Super Season Recognised

In the ocean or in the pool very few people were able to stop Terrigal’s Paul Lemmon in season 2014/15, and his efforts in the water have culminated in him being named Masters Athlete of the Year at the NSW Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence.

Competing in the 45-49 year category, Lemmon amassed an astonishing medal haul of over 45 medals in the last twelve months tasting success at a branch, state, national, and international level while doing so.

Among his many highlights was a personal tally of 11 medals (7 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze) at the International Lifesaving Championships in France last September.

He was crowned world champion in the 200 metres Obstacle Race in the pool, an event he also won at both the NSW and Australian Championships – and for good measure he also broke the world record for the 100 metre Manikin Carry.

Demonstrating that he’s as good in the ocean as in the pool he also won the Surf Race and Ironman double at a NSW, Australian and World level.

“It’s the eighth time since 1999 that I’ve won a Masters Athlete Award so it’s something I can look back on and be very proud of,” Lemmon said after receiving his award on Saturday.

“I think for me my best achievement of this season was winning Ironman at all the levels. It’s such a tough race both physically and mentally and is rightly regarded as the blue ribbon event of water sports.

When asked what motivates him to continue pushing himself to race in both disciplines the larrikin side of him disappears for just a moment.

“The reason why I do it is to stay healthy, enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and be a positive role model for all the members both young and old of Terrigal Surf Club.

In a flash the grin is back.

“Well I also do it because I truly love the sport, and it’s always nice to get a win,” he said.

The 2015 SLSNSW Awards of Excellence are proudly presented by Stramit Building Products. Almost 350 of Surf Life Saving’s most outstanding lifesavers, athletes, educators, coaches, and administrators from around the state gathered at Sydney’s iconic Four Seasons Hotel for a night of celebration.
