Lifesavers on Scene of Ballina Shark Attack
A body boarder is in critical condition after being bitten by a shark at Lighthouse Beach, Ballina on Thursday.
At approximately 10am AEDT, the State Operations Centre was informed of reports of male being pulled from the water by his friends after suffering serious lower leg injuries in what is believed to be a shark attack.
Lifesavers attended the scene along with police and paramedics who worked to stabilise the man. The man aged in his 30s was later flown to hospital.
The species of the shark is not known at this stage with a Department of Primary Industry (DPI) investigation about the incident to follow.
“A local Duty Officer attended the scene along with other lifesaving assets including inflatable rescue boats (IRB) and jet skis to assist with clearing the water and will continue to assist in monitoring the area,” Australian Lifeguard Service NSW Coordinator Brent Manieri said.
“In line with standard procedure all beaches across the Ballina Shire Council Area will be closed for at least the next 24 hours. A decision on when to reopen will be made in due course in consultation with all stakeholders.”
There are no patrolled beaches in the Ballina Shire during the winter months.
