MacMasters Beach SLSC Wins Landcare Award
MacMasters Beach SLSC has won a NSW Regional Landcare Award and has now been nominated for the NSW Award for ‘Coastal Communities’ and is looking for your support to vote for the club’s entry to win the award.
The award which comes under the 'People's Choice' category is for the club’s coordination of the clean-up program in Brisbane Water, the Hawkesbury River and its tributaries.
Since April 2012, the program has managed to remove more than 15.5 tonnes of rubbish from Woy Woy Bay alone.
Following a Duke of Edinburgh field trip, the MacMasters Beach SLSC raised the issue of foreshore litter with Brisbane Water National Parks and Wildlife Service staff. They supported the group’s idea to remove litter from the Hawkesbury estuary foreshores using the club’s Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRB) and it is now utilised as a community service for participants in the Duke of Edinburgh program.
More than 50 fifty trips have been conducted and active program promotion has allowed the activities to expand into other surf clubs. More than 70 kilometres of foreshore area is now monitored.
Graham Johnston of MacMasters SLSC who has been facilitating the program says that many disengaged children and children with disabilities have gotten a lot from the initiative.
“Not only are they really making a difference to the environment in the region but these kids have acquired knowledge in coastal issues including weed identification in riparian vegetation and bush regeneration skills, sea bed protection, importance of seagrass habitat and mangroves, and the impacts of beach and floating litter,” says Johnston.
So far 170 participants from the MacMasters Beach community have participated in the program but Graham says the work is far from done.
“It is extremely gratifying to win this award and to be voted for the State award would be a huge recognition for the club and its volunteers but the job's not done yet and we've still got plenty to clean up.”
The club is calling for volunteers this weekend (Sunday 4th) for the Kincumber Foreshore Clean-up.
