Mid North Coast Athletes Pick Up Medals at Country Champs
Athletes from the Mid North Coast made the journey to Mollymook Beach for the 2014 Stramit NSW Country Championships from 17-19 January.
The Carroll’s from Tacking Point SLSC were at it again with Ryan and Jessie dominating the water events in their respective age groups.
Ryan competed in both the U14 and U15 events, taking Gold in the U14 Board Race, U14 Ironperson, U15 Ironperson, U15 Rescue Tube Race and Silver in the U14 Surf Race, U15 Board Race and U15 Surf Race.
“I was really surprised to win some of these events because I was up against my competition from Interbranch that I lost to,” said Ryan.
“It is a challenging competition but my aim is to come and take out as many events as possible and I have done that. I can’t thank my coach Dave Rickwood enough. I wouldn’t be here without him. His tactic to use the sandbank were unbelievable and I wouldn’t have won without it,” he added.
Jessie secured Gold in the U13 Board Race and Ironperson and Bronze in the U13 Surf Race.
“The conditions are great here at Mollymook, the competition is tough but I have been training really hard,” said Jessie.
“Tacking Point is such a supportive club and everyone will do anything for each other. Our club is going extremely well so far. My goals this weekend were just to have fun and place in every event,” she added.
Other notable performances from Tacking Point were Raelene Myers in the 40-49 Surf Race, Amanda Higgerson in the 50-59 yrs 2K Beach Run, Alia Lievore in the Open and U19 Surf Board Riding, Jared Humphreys in the U11 Beach Flags and Amelia Humphries in the U15 Surf Board Riding.
Wauchope Bonny Hills
Coach Dave Rickwood was thrilled with the efforts of young Sarah Stewart from Wauchope Bonny Hills who made an incredible effort to secure Silver in the U11 Ironperson and Bronze in the U11 Board Race.
“Sarah is a gutsy little competitor and she had some great results,” said Dave.
“We are excited about travelling to Country Champs in another region. It has been a great opportunity for team bonding and Tacking Point and Wauchope Bonny Hills have small but very strong crews down here,” he added.
“It’s not the best conditions out there and it is getting very windy but I got out and I am confident in all my water events. We have been here since Monday and it has been very nice. Travelling as a team has been a good advantage,” said Sarah.
Other notable Wauchope Bonny Hills results included Raquel Seale in the 30-39 Beach Flags, Andrew Sinclair in the 40-49 Beach Sprint, Gilbert Olzomer in the Open 2KM Beach Run, Keely Sinclair in the U13 Beach Flags and Hugh Hurkett in the U17 Surf Board Riding.
Port Macquarie SLSC had a large group of competitors contributing to their success at achieving eighth in the overall pointscore.
Fleur Sherlock got Port Macquarie off to a good start in the Junior events winning the U9 Beach Sprint and taking Silver in the Beach Flags as well as being part of the winning U9 Mixed Beach Relay.
