Momentum Building For Far South Coast Bears

The Far South Coast branch is starting to build momentum in Surf Sports, with the team fielding the largest ever squad for last weekend’s Interbranch Championships at Soldiers Beach on the Central Coast.

31 competitors made the nine hour trip to the Central Coast to pit themselves against some of the best Surf athletes in NSW.

While the perennial underdogs only reached the podium once they managed to gain significant ground on the Lower North Coast compared to 2012.

Team Coach Sean Hendry says it was a significant milestone for the team to field a competitor in every age group this year.

“I’m extremely proud of the team’s efforts this year and we’ve really concentrated on nurturing our younger athletes and ensuring they are enjoying their first big team trip away. If we can keep our younger stars engaged and having fun then we can really start to build development pathways through our age groups.”

Tom Pritchard from Batemans Bay who finished third in the Opens Beach Sprint final said that team trips away are a fantastic learning experience for the younger athletes.

“The older guys really mentor and look after our rookies. Because some of us live up to three or four hours apart we don’t get to spend a lot of time together training, so trips like this are really fun and good for team spirit.”

Jake Gray from Tathra who competed in the U12s for the first time said he loved his first experience competing at Interbranch.

“It’s a lot harder than the branch competitions because you really are against the best athletes from around the state and you’ve got to try your hardest but it’s really fun to go away with the whole team.”
