Name: Callan Nickerson

Age: 24

Club: Stockton SLSC

Occupation: Public Servant

When did you join Surf Life Saving and why?:
I joined nippers in Under 9s in 1999 and progressed through the nippers age groups and achieved my Bronze Medallion once I was old enough. Straight after I began doing patrols and started surf boat rowing and am currently the club President – I suppose the rest is history.

Why do you volunteer?:
It’s a great feeling knowing that you are giving back to the community, making an environment safe for people while patrolling. It’s also a great feeling knowing that I am a part of one of the oldest and biggest voluntary movements in the world. The comradery and mateship in Surf Life Saving is second to none.

How many hours in total have you volunteered for Surf Life Saving?
Since 2007 I have patrolled 779.25 hours plus thousands more in the office and in the surf boat!

What’s the favourite thing about being a volunteer?
My favourite thing is knowing that I am making a contribution to my local community.

What would you tell someone to encourage them to become a Surf Life Saving volunteer?
Surf Life Saving is a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet new friends and be a part of the community all while having a great time at the beach!

Favourite moment as a volunteer in Surf Life Saving?
There are several favourite moments but one that stands out the most was successfully completing my first rescue – it gave me a great sense of achievement by putting into practice all that I had learnt while doing my Bronze Medallion, plus the great feeling of helping someone who couldn’t help themselves was rewarding.
