New Host for NSW Surf Champs
Surf Life Saving NSW has announced the state’s premier event, the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships will be held at Swansea-Belmont SLSC in 2017 and 2018.
After four years at Ocean Beach-Umina, the State Championships will move to its new home by the shores of Lake Macquarie, which was the location of the event for three years from 2008-2010.
The Swansea-Belmont bid to host the event was deemed the best all-round option considered by Surf Life Saving NSW, among a number of other high-quality expressions of interest from elsewhere in the state.
With the support of the Lake Macquarie City Council and the continued major partnership with ClubsNSW, the State Championships will attract around 7000 competitors, 600 officials, thousands of spectators and will inject around $10M into the local economy.
Surf Life Saving NSW Sports Manager Rob Pidgeon says the new location is ideal for an event this size, with plenty of beach, reliable surf conditions and a range of accommodation options in the local area.
“Swansea Belmont has successfully hosted many of our major carnivals over the years and the club and its volunteers always put in an outstanding effort,” he said.
“It’s a huge undertaking for any club but it is also a huge privilege to welcome the state’s finest surf lifesavers to your beach and then host an event to remember.”
Swansea-Belmont SLSC President Graham Burge says the club is very excited to have the State Titles back at Blacksmiths Beach.
“We’ll be setting up an organising committee shortly to start planning for next year. We are grateful for the support of Lake Macquarie City Council and the local community and look forward to welcoming everyone to the event in 2017,” he said.
