New Voices on Radio

New voices will be heard on the radio network as the newest SurfCom volunteers undertake training at Surf Life Saving NSW Headquarters in Belrose on 7 December 2013.

In a one day intensive radio operators course, volunteers will begin to learn and be trained in assisting clubs and support operations from centralised locations in incident management and day to day communications. All operators will then begin supervised shifts as they gain more experience before they join the SurfCom roster.

Surf Life Saving NSW, Lifesaving Manager, Andy Kent says that SurfCom volunteers are a vital link in Surf Life Saving emergency management capabilities.

"SurfCom operators ensure that clubs can patrol the beach effectively and assist in managing incidents.

"They are a great bunch of highly dedicated volunteers and we encourage everyone to get involved," said Andy.

The training day will cover a wide variety of topics including learning how to respond and provide support to emergency incidents, determining the location of an emergency incident and desk top scenarios. All participants will obtain the Silver Medallion Communication Centre Operator award upon completion.
