Newport Surf Athletes Do It For Tim

Newport Surf Life Saving Club rode a wave of success at the 2013 Allphones NSW Open Surf Life Saving Championships held at Ocean Beach-Umina.

Around 3200 competitors from U15 through to Opens battled it out on the beach and in the water for State Titles glory.

After the tragic death of competition manager, Tim Francis, athletes from Newport pulled together to support each other and take home a hoard of medals.

In an intense final of the Open ski relay, Newport team mates Tom Atkinson, Chad Alston and Luke Morrison pulled ahead to win by a short margin and take the gold. Coach, James Brooks, said he was incredibly proud of the boy’s outstanding performance.

“The most inspiring thing to watch is the team spirit and everyone coming together to support each other and their victories.” “Tim is certainly riding on their backs today,” he said.

South Australian born Luke and Chad said their experience in flat water certainly helped them in the conditions. The boys also worked together to secure gold in the Open male double ski on Day 3 of the competition.

U19 competitor Max Brooks was on fire in the team events and secured gold in the taplin relay, board relay, surf team, double ski and single ski relay. Max was also strong in his individual events taking silver in the U19 single ski and board race and the bronze in the U19 ironman.

“My preparation was interrupted by me having the flu but I am happy with how I am feeling at the moment. The conditions are tough and it’s definitely a pool swimmers race out there.

“Tim is definitely in the back of our minds. He did a lot for us and we are all here because of him,” said Max.

Max is also incredibly proud of younger brother Charlie who took the gold in the U15 board relay and silver in the U15 surf teams, ironman and board rescue. “Charlie has improved a lot and is definitely catching up. I am excited to see him going so well,” he added.

Other notable Newport athletes included Jonah Beard who snatched gold in the U19 male surf race and was awarded the Saxon Bird Memorial Trophy. Saxon's parents Dana and Phil Bird presented Jonah Beard with the award.
