Newport Taplin Boys – A Team United
Three years, 48 weeks of training per season, twenty three squad members, countless training sessions, one dream.
The hours of hard work has paid off for the Newport Male Taplin teams who have been crowned Team of the Year at the NSW Awards of Excellence ceremony in Sydney after a spectacularly successful season.
At Interbranch, State and National level the U17, 19s, and Open Men won 8 gold medals and one bronze out of a possible 9 events. Along the way they became the first club to clean-sweep all three men’s Taplin events at The Aussies.
The Open team was also the first NSW side to win an Open Taplin at the Aussies in a generation, and the ongoing success of the three teams helped Newport to their best ever result nationally, and a second successive club championship at the State Titles earlier this year.
“Winning the open title at the Aussies was amazing and it is something that still hasn’t sunk in yet. It’s something I’ll probably look back at in 10 years maybe even when I’m 30 and see our names there and realise what a special achievement that was,” Newport Open Taplin Member Mitchell Trim said.
“To achieve those results at that beach (Kirra) you need a lot of things to go your way. You need to be able to rely on your teammates, you need good skills and technique and a healthy dose of luck along the way, which I think we had.
“I can tell you for a fact that none of those major titles came easy."
Apart from their dedication to their sport, the boys are all outstanding club representatives having contributed a total of 715 hour of patrol duty, participated at fund raisers and promoted social courses with their Breast Cancer Awareness Stickers plastered to their water craft.
Despite their achievement this season, the Newport boys are determined not to rest on their laurels.
“We’re a tight bunch of blokes we all train together, we socialise together so for all of us to achieve success in the 17 19s and Opens is something that I think we can be very proud of. The aim now is for us to go back to back,” Trim said.
