North Bondi Crowned Top Club
Three years ago North Bondi initiated a comprehensive review into the structure and governance of their historic Sydney club, with their efforts culminating in being named the Club of the Year at the 2016 NSW Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence.
By almost any measure it has been an extraordinarily successful 2015/16 season for the club.
The Club has several improvement programs across education, youth, competition and lifesaving. Season 2015-16 saw the start of a holistic review of the strategies and alignment of all the programs with the overarching club strategy.
The key objective was to ensure that all the areas work together with the same aims and aspirations, and to future proof the club to ensure that the lifesavers of North Bondi will continue to have a functioning club well into the future.
One of the key innovations in recent years has been the development of the Swapsea application. This has been used by members as a tool to efficiently swap and manage patrols. Since its introduction, the number of members with 100% patrol attendance has continually increased, with 35 in 2011-13 (prior to Swapsea), 64 last season and 95 members this season.
A new general manager position has been created in 2016 to help streamline club operations, and has been generally regarded as a successful initiative.
“We’re a big club and we have our issues but we keep trying to be better like every other club in NSW. Whether we’re a small or big club we have to do the best we can with what we’ve got,” Club President, Mark Cotter said.
“I’d like to thank our members for their hard work. It’s a group effort which ultimately achieved this award. We’ve tried hard for a long time to do everything right and it’s coming together now which is pleasing.”
“It’s an honour, we’re one of the seven oldest surf clubs in Australia and we do take pride in that and to get it all together and be so big it’s a huge wrap on our membership,” Mark Cotter concluded.
Throughout their history, North Bondi has always demonstrated a willingness to evolve and embrace new ideas. The club sees its core function as saving lives, and its most valuable asset their members.
The 2016 SLSNSW Awards of Excellence are proudly presented by Stramit Building Products. Over 350 of Surf Life Saving’s most outstanding lifesavers, athletes, educators, coaches, and administrators from around NSW gathered at Sydney’s iconic Four Seasons Hotel for a night of celebration.
