North Palm Beach Pick Up Green Award

North Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) has received a high commendation for its environmental work in the local area.

The Keep Australia Beautiful Sydney Water 2012 Clean Beaches - Connecting Our Coast Awards were held at Coledale SLSC in Wollongong on 26 November 2012.

The awards aim to recognise outstanding environmental initiatives implemented by local government authorities, schools, clubs and communities from the NSW Northern Rivers and North Coast down to the Illawarra and South Coast.

North Palm Beach SLSC was presented with a high commendation for its Dune Restoration and Regeneration Project. The Project targeted protecting and preserving the beach and sand dune from erosion, protecting native plant species and building capacity for Surf Club members and volunteers to take ownership of the natural environment at Governor Phillip Park Palm Beach.

Surf Club members and volunteers have laboured to remove existing fencing, rip out weeds and fix the drainage problem in order to re-profile the sand dune and promote revegetation of 8800 native plants.

Since then, a maintenance group has been formed which meets every month and is gradually moving the environmental work south, with the help of funding provided by the Hawkesbury/Nepean and Pittwater Councils.

Michael Tancred, Member of North Palm Beach SLSC said, "Next year we are going to go for even bigger award categories as we are really working to reduce our carbon footprint. In addition to the Dune Restoration and Regeneration Project, we also run the club on solar power and use a recycled water system".

A State Winners Breakfast will be held on Thursday morning at Dunes Restaurant and Kiosk, Palm Beach, to further acknowledge all awards participants.

Surf Life Saving NSW is also working closely with Keep Australia Beautiful, who have provided financial support for a project aimed at making long term impacts on recycling. The project hopes to reduce waste and pollution from the 2013 Allphones NSW Surf Life Saving Championships.
