Northern Beaches Again Strong At Masters Championships

Sydney Northern Beaches surf clubs have maintained their dominance in NSW after gaining the clean sweep of taking out the Age, Opens and Masters Championships at the 2014 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships supported by ClubsNSW.

Queenscliff(1st), Palm Beach(6th), Newport(7th) and Manly(13th) all featured in the top 15 in the state with Queenscliff the star of the peninsular.

The club were particularly strong in the team’s races collecting gold in plenty of races including the 140yrs Female Beach Relay, 200yrs Male and Female Beach Relay, 45yrs and over Female Double Ski and the 170+ board relay.

The trio of Peter Dean, Edward Kwanten and Ian Poole went a long way towards proving where their famous offspring got their determination from by winning a gold medal in the 170+ board relay. The three of them are all dads to some especially talented kids; Australian Netballer Eliza Dean, Nutri Grain Ironman Matt Poole and Hollywood star Ryan Kwanten.

“So happy with that win! We’ve definitely been training hard and can’t wait to tell Ryan. Today it’s all about the dads,” said Edward.

After competing last weekend at the New Zealand Nationals, Collaroy's Sigi Hill convincingly took out the 40-44 Surf Race and got a bronze in the Ironman.

"It is a pool swimmers paradise out there! The vibe here at Masters is great, it is lots of fun and gives people a chance to have a go across the Open and Masters competition," said Sigi.

Sigi and wife Robyn Hill, also competing for Collaroy, maintain a tag team when it comes to looking after their three children, working and training.

"This is my first year in the forties age group and it is very competitive. There are lots of athletes coming back to competition after having kids and things," said Sigi.

Robyn did pretty well herself netting a silver in the surf race, board race and Iron Woman and bronze in the rescue tube race.
