NSW Finish Second At Interstate Championships

NSW has finished second to arch rivals Qld in the 2014 Interstate Championships at Newport Beach (Sydney) on Friday.

In challenging wind-swept conditions, the NSW Blues fell agonisingly short in the final tally losing to a QLD side boasting seven times Ironman Champion, Shannon Eckstein and 2x Ironwoman Champion, Courtney Hancock by just five points.

However NSW won a lot of team events including the Open Ironman and Ironwoman teams, Open Women’s ski teams, U19s Male Ski Teams, Opens Women’s Board Teams and more.

As well as the teams a number of NSW athletes finished first in their races including Kendrick Louis (Newport), Georgia Miller (Manly), Jay Furniss (Wanda), Hannah Minogue (Bulli), Riley Fitzimmons (Avoca), Jess Suriano (North Bondi), Jake Lynch (Newport), Katie Mott (Helensburgh Stanwell Park), Max Brooks (Newport), Bronte Sloan (Manly), Jake O’Brien (Avoca) and Daniel Colllins (Redhead).

For some of the new generation such as Daniel Collins who was selected in the NSW team for the first time, the experience was unforgettable.

“The camp has been amazing, the coaching staff and the senior athletes have been really fun and positive and the whole team really got a chance to bond,” said Daniel.

Others such as Jake O Brien have been a part of the team for five years. Jake, who won the U19s Flags and came third in the sprint, says that the Interstate program gets better every year.

“It’s a fantastic experience and the support and coaching crew always balance the seriousness and professionalism of the occasion with an emphasis on having fun and enjoying the unique experience.”
