NSW Pool Rescue Team Impress In NZ

New South Wales’ most promising Under 18 pool rescue athletes have made their mark on the 2015 New Zealand Pool Championships, bringing home 27 medals.

The team competed against New Zealand clubs and the China Life Saving Association over three days of record breaking performances with the NSW Pool Rescue Development Team finishing the event with nine gold, ten silver and eight bronze.

All 12 NSW athletes produced impressive results with the team winning five relay gold medals, four silver and three bronze to cap off a successful event.

In terms of individual medals, Central Coast Branch were represented well with Rachel Wood (Umina) claiming two gold and a silver, Jemma Smith (Umina) taking home one of each medal and Corey Fletcher from Terrigal winning a silver and two bronze.

Callum Lowe-Griffiths from Queenscliff was outstanding, finishing with a gold in the 200m swim with obstacles, three silver and a bronze while Samantha King (Elouera) claimed bronze in the U18 100m manikin tow with fins.

Surf Life Saving NSW Team Manager, Don Van Keimpema, says the team’s performance in New Zealand is a credit to the athletes.

“I was very impressed with them over the three days of competition. They’re a very talented bunch of athletes and they exceeded my expectations and I think theirs as well.

“The majority of the team achieved new personal best times and being able to perform like this on the big stage is a credit to them and the hard work they have put in over the last few seasons,” said Mr Van Keimpema.

Van Keimpema was also impressed by how the team performed in the relays and what they achieved with only a short time to prepare combinations.

“Being able to achieve the results they did in the relays shows what a great team they were and I think this also helped them develop as individual athletes,” Mr Van Keimpema added.
