NSW Rubber Duckie Team Go For Gold
The NSW IRB (Inflatable Rescue Boat) team will be racing for a gold medal and national supremacy at the Interstate IRB Championships on Thursday 18th July at Mindil Beach, Darwin.
The 18 strong Interstate team; a hand-picked, high performance group of drivers and crews from a number of the top performing clubs in NSW, will fight it out against arch rivals Queensland as well as the other states and the hosts, Northern Territory.
The team which was selected following the NSW IRB Premiership, State Championships and three high performance training camps is comprised of drivers and crews from South Maroubra, North Cronulla, Catherine Hill Bay, Kiama Downs, Caves Beach and Windang Surf Life Saving Clubs.
The Queenslanders are once again the team to beat and while the IRB Interstate trophy has never been won by NSW, Head NSW Coach Andrew Turner believes that the squad has a real chance to snatch victory in Darwin.
“This year we are strong across all disciplines and if we make no mistakes the other states will need to be on the top of their game to beat us. Queensland are always strong and well drilled and they have won it the last few years and we can’t discount Victoria who will be in the hunt as well but we’ll be doing everything we can to stop them.“
Conditions at Mindil Beach will be quite different for the NSW teams with tropical air temperatures at 32 degrees and the water temperature a balmy 25 degrees.
Team members will go on to compete for their own clubs on Friday 19th - Sunday 21st July in the National IRB Championships (also at Mindil Beach).
