Queenscliff Wins 2014 NSW Masters Championships

Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club has topped the overall poinstcore at the 2014 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships supported by ClubsNSW.

With just a handful of events left to run organisers were forced to cancel the Championships early with an apocalyptic afternoon storm bringing wind, rain and some lightning to Ocean Beach/ Umina.

The 55 person squad from Sydney’s Northern Beaches excelled across all divisions to finish just ahead of local powerhouse Avoca SLSC and Coogee SLSC at Ocean Beach/Umina.

Queenscliff were particularly strong in the team’s races collecting gold in plenty of races including the 140yrs Female Beach Relay, 200yrs Male and Female Beach Relay, 45yrs and over Female Double Ski and the 170+ board relay.

Perhaps one of the more remarkable individual medal tallies of the championships goes to Newcastle’s Lee Howes who collected a whopping haul of eight medals in both the team and individual disciplines.

While her teammates say that Lee is a big part of the strong Masters culture at the Newcastle SLSC, Howes herself says that the secret lies in keeping competition fun and social.

“We’re lucky we’ve really got a good crew of masters. We train together quite a bit but it’s all very social and if you can’t have a beer together and unwind then what’s the point really,” said Lee.

The top 15 clubs in the overall club point score are as follows:

  1. Queenscliff SLSC
  2. Avoca Beach SLSC
  3. Coogee SLSC
  4. Maroubra SLSC
  5. Bondi Surf Bathers LSC
