Redhead on Fire at State Champs

Redhead SLSC surf athletes showed everyone how it’s done at the 2013 Allphones NSW Opens Surf Life Saving Championships held at Ocean Beach-Umina from 8-10 March.

Around 4000 competitors from U15 through to Masters battled it out on the beach and in the water for State Titles glory this week.

Masters competitors from Redhead SLSC popped up in many of the Open water events to show the younger ones they still had it in them.

Former Olympic champion Shane Suska and team mate Dean Little did well to secure the Bronze in the Opens double ski event behind Newport and Warilla-Barrack Point. Peter Scott took the silver in the Open single ski, pictured here giving daughter Bonnie a big hug after the race.

“That was definitely an unexpected result but we are so happy,” said Dean.

Other notable Redhead athletes included Isak Costello and Stewart McLachlan. Isak secured silver in the Open and U19 taplins and U19 surf team and bronze in the U19 surf race and board rescue while Stewart took the silver in the Open board race.

Redhead competitors helped their club to 15th place overall in the Open Champs, while Swansea Belmont finished up 12th.

The program for next year’s State Championships was also announced at the official ceremony and March Past today.

Increasing levels of participation and the sheer size of the event program have put pressure on organisers’ ability to run the event effectively and fairly. After seeking feedback from both competitors and officials, organisers have decided to split out some events and run the program over several consecutive weekends instead of a 10 day block. This will mean less clashing of events so athletes won’t miss out on the opportunity to participate and will reduce the need for people to take time off work or school to compete.

The 2014 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships will be held from the 28th of February to the 2nd of March for the Age Championships and the 7th to the 9th of March for the Open event. The Masters competitors will have their own dedicated event to be held on the 15th and 16th of March. Lifesaving events will be held on 22nd and 23rd of Feb.
