Rubber Duckies Return For Premiership

It's racing season again as the 2014 NSW Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) Premiership is set to kick off this weekend at Collaroy Beach on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

The first of four Premiership rounds will see a strong field take to the water with over 280 competitors from 22 surf clubs lining up to do battle over two days of competition.

Defending Premiership champions, Kiama Downs SLSC, will be the team to beat again after their dominant performances in 2013.

Team Manager, Steven Guy, says the squad have been counting down the days till the season begins and some changes within their team can help them with their title defence.

“We are hoping that some of the younger team members from last year will add some extra depth to the team this year in their drive and crew positions, and that some of us oldies will be able to hold it together for another season.

"I have had the privilege of being involved in the IRB development days leading into this season, and under the tutelage of super coach Nathan Foster there have been some new clubs join the IRB fold through the process so it should be an exciting year,” said Steven.

Other teams that should threaten for the title include 2013 NSW Champions Caves Beach SLSC, Catherine Hill Bay SLSC, Queenscliff SLSC, South Maroubra SLSC and Thirroul SLSC while there are sure to be many more surprises as the action unfolds.

SLSNSW Surf Sports Manager, Shane Knight, says that there is a lot of excitement around the launch of the Premiership this year.

“We’re really excited to be kicking off the season at Collaroy Beach. The competitors have had a long off season and have been training hard with many attending development clinics around the state in the lead up to the Premiership Series.

“This year the series will showcase some of the best IRB drivers and crew across the State and winning the series, is as big as winning the State Championships,” said Shane Knight.

The IRB Premiership Series will head to Batemans Bay, Terrigal and Woonona for the next three rounds of competition.
