Sandon Point Lifesavers Awarded Rescue of the Month
A group of surf lifesavers from Sandon Point SLSC have been awarded the National and NSW Rescue of the Month for September 2014 after their dramatic rescue of a young surfer.
On Sunday 21 September at 11:00am, a local surfer competing in a junior board riding competition fell heavily and hit his head on the shallow reef. A group of social swimmers, including two Sandon Point SLSC members Jason Hinds and Christian Szanto, were nearby and swam over immediately. Jason noticed that the patient was in extreme pain and that there was the potential of a spinal injury. Jason stabilised the surfer’s head with his hands while Christian assisted to keep the patient afloat.
Sandon Point member Rod Johnston swam out to help and the surfer was secured on his board and brought back to shore. While in the shallows, further assistance arrived from off duty Lifeguard Keith Miller, members of the Sandon Point Riders and local Fire Brigade. Keith placed a neck collar on the patient and more patrolling members from Sandon Point SLSC arrived on scene. Sue Martin, the Patrol Captain, took over patient first aid and managed to calm the patient who was distressed and agitated.
Together with paramedics, the lifesavers lifted the patient and carefully crossed a rocky ledge before climbing stairs to the top of the headland where he was placed in the Ambulance.
This combined rescue effort is a great example of community groups coming together to protect the public and save lives. Each rescuer is to be commended for their contribution. This incident highlights the ability and skills of lifesavers from Sandon Point SLSC to adapt and perform in a challenging rescue situation.
The SLSNSW Rescue of the Month aims to recognise excellence in lifesaving. Each month a ‘Rescue of the Month’ is awarded at State level for the most outstanding rescue performance for that period. Monthly winners have the chance to win the Australian Rescue of the Month and become finalists for the SLSNSW Rescue of the Year which is presented at the annual Awards of Excellence.
