South Maroubra Clubbies Assist Injured Fisherman

It was a case of right place, right time, for a group of South Maroubra clubbies who were called upon to assist an injured rock fisherman in Sydney on Sunday.

The volunteer lifesavers were conducting a pre-season gear inspection of their equipment including their Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRB) when they heard reports of a fisherman having suffered a serious injury at a rock platform just around the point. As the IRB was already in place, council lifeguards asked if they could launch into the water and see if they could locate the injured man.

Club Captain Damian Woods, a council lifeguard, and club members Christopher Maloney and Michael Hernandez made the short trip around the point and were able to visually spot the patient.

Mr Woods and the lifeguard jumped into the water and were able to scramble up to the rocks where they were able to perform initial first aid to the man who had suffered a serious break to his lower leg.

“It was lucky that we had all the gear out and ready to go this morning including a fully stocked first aid kit. There was a little swell this morning but it wasn’t too bad.” Mr Woods said.

“That location is not an easy place to get too as it’s quite isolated, and takes at least thirty minutes to reach by foot. It’s the second incident involving a fisherman in that spot in a year and we are very pleased to be able to assist in his treatment.”

The injured man is a 37-year-old Korean national who was fishing with a group of friends.

“It appears that in the process of hooking a fish he’s overbalanced and fallen off onto a lower rock platform,” Mr Wood said.

The NSW Ambulance Rescue Helicopter, Paramedics and other emergency service workers attended the scene after the injured man was winched to a nearby reserve. His injuries were stabilised and he was later transported to hospital.
