Surf Life Saving Recognised At NSW Sport Federation Awards
Surf Life Saving had a strong showing at the 2013 NSW Sports Federation Awards, taking out three categories on Thursday night (28/11/13).
The annual awards held at Allphone’s Arena in Sydney, recognises industry-wide the outstanding achievements of athletes, coaches, officials, events, media and administrators as a celebration of sport in 2013.
Paul Lemmon of Terrigal SLSC has taken out the Masters Athlete of the Year.
In a massive year, Paul won five gold, two silver and one bronze at the International Life Saving World Championships in the 45-49 years division. At the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships he received gold in the Iron Man & Surf Race and silver in the 130 years Taplin Relay as well as numerous other achievements at a state and regional level.
Despite Paul’s stellar list of achievements he was shocked when he won the award.
“Honestly I was just so grateful to be nominated and to win the award and with the calibre of athletes I was up against it was just an amazing feeling. I’m honestly still in shock but really happy and I just want to thank Surf Life Saving NSW for nominating me,” said Paul Lemmon.
The event also served as an opportunity to honour the achievements of those bestowed with the Distinguished Long Service Award
Jeff Mowbray of Swansea Belmont SLSC received a Distinguished Long Service Award acknowledging his amazing commitment to Surf Sports and Surf Lifesaving for over 25 years.
Jeff has been Head Coach of Hunter Branch and the NSW State Team leading NSW to victory in eight of nine Interstate Championships. As a Level 3 Official he has been the Carnival Referee for the NSW State Surf Life Saving Championships five times and assisted in the development of international athletes and young surf life savers alike through Regional Development Clinics such as Coaching the Coast and the Talented Athlete Program.
Finally Southern Cross Austereo has won the Sports Media Award for their partnership with SLSNSW during the 2013 State Championships.
