Surf Lifesavers Respond to Drowning on Mid North Coast

Early Sunday afternoon, the Surf Rescue Emergency Response System was activated by Police to respond to reports a man was found floating unconscious near Stuarts point on the mid north coast.

An Inflatable Rescue Boat was tasked from South West Rocks SLSC along with branch duty officers.

The IRB travelled five kms north to the location and located the male in the water unconscious and not breathing. Macksville-Scotts Head SLSC call out team was tasked to respond and proceeded to the location by 4WD with a defibrillator and oxygen supplies.

Resuscitation attempts were continued for more than half an hour before NSW Ambulance declared the patient deceased.

It appears the man was swimming at an unpatrolled beach when he was caught in a rip and taken 400m out to sea.

Onlookers witnessed the tragedy and alerted the Police.

Mid North Coast Branch President and President of South West Rocks SLSC, Rod McDonagh, said the incident highlighted the dangers along our coast and the need to swim only at patrolled locations.

"Our volunteers did a great job to reach the isolated location quickly and commence resuscitation attempts. Our thoughts are with the man's family and friends," said Rod McDonagh.
