Sydney Branch Takes Early Lead At Interbranch Championships

After a tightly fought day of competition Sydney Branch is in the lead following day one of the 2013 NSW Surf Life Saving Interbranch Championships at Soldiers Beach on the Central Coast.

Tough and gritty performances were the mark of a day where relentless wind chop and a strong south-easterly seabreeze tested the mettle of NSW’s top surf sports competitors both in the water and on the beach.

In his first year in the Open’s division, Australian Gold Medallist Ben Carberry (Warilla Barrack Point SLSC) from the South Coast team took out the prestigious Men’s Ironman race.

“I’d already had a couple of really tough races this morning so it feels really good to win one! There’s so many variables out there with the wind and the current and it’s all about picking the right line,” said Ben.

In the Open’s Ironwoman, Sydney Northern Beaches Mieke Kassulke (Manly LSC) survived a late tumble in the final ski leg to win that race. In a huge individual effort for her team Mieke also finished 1st in the Open’s Board and 3rd in the Open’s Ski behind the Far North Coast’s Nadine Canning (Cudgen Headland SLSC) and her Northern Beaches teammate, Rachel Crerar (Manly LSC).

Saturday may also have unearthed a new future superstar in the form of Sydney competitor Leo Nosatti (North Cronulla SLSC) in the U13s. In a momentous effort, Leo won the Board, Swim and Ironman events for his age group and was a part of the winning Sydney All Age Junior Beach Relay Team.

“The Interbranch Championships are such a good contest because it really is the best against the best and I love that the team all sticks together and motivates one another for a big race,” said Leo.

The competitors are not only fighting it out for Branch glory, but to secure their place in the NSW State Team which will be announced tomorrow at the conclusion of the weekend’s competition.
