Sydney Northern Beaches Named Top Branch
Looking to the future and securing the present paid off handsomely for Sydney Northern Beaches Branch after they were crowned Branch of The Year at the 2015 NSW Awards of Excellence on Saturday night.
Season 2014/15 has been a busy one with the branch developing and implementing over 40 initiatives in an effort to strengthen the lifesaving movement across the area’s 21 clubs.
Changes were rolled out in the fields of lifesaving, surf sports, training and education, member development and business services as well as a strategic group being formed to investigate what they want the branch to look like in 2020.
“Every Branch aspires to be recognised as Branch of the Year and this award belongs to everyone in Sydney Northern Beaches who has contributed to what was a fantastic season,” Sydney Northern Beaches President Doug Menzies said on Saturday.
“I am proud of the fact that we have been able to achieve in so many areas. Our education continues to strengthen, and no lives were lost while our volunteers were on patrol. That is after all what it is all about.”
Some of the highlights in lifesaving include the implementation of the duty officer mentoring program and the willingness of volunteer lifesavers to help assist clubs in other branches fulfil their patrol obligations – most notably at Taree Old Bar.
In surf sports short sharp carnivals and event specific (ski and board) races were trialled with great success and there was a concerted effort to encourage bronze medallion assessors to become surf sport officials because of their developed knowledge.
Graduating Nippers in the U14 age group also got to participate in the Surf Rescue Challenge Day; a program where they are introduced to the SRC assessment procedure and then get to participate in group activities.
It is hoped that this will create a fun environment as they move to the next stage of their lifesaving career.
The 2015 SLSNSW Awards of Excellence are proudly presented by Stramit Building Products. Almost 350 of Surf Life Saving’s most outstanding lifesavers, athletes, educators, coaches, and administrators from around the state gathered at Sydney’s iconic Four Seasons Hotel for a night of celebration.
