Top Honours For Talented Tweed Lifeguard
It was a night to remember at the 2016 NSW Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence for Tweed Valley Lifeguard Angus Macphail who was announced as Lifeguard of the Year at a gala ceremony in Sydney last Saturday.
The 20-year-old has spent time patrolling at multiple locations throughout the Tweed as well as doing countless behind-the-scene work ensuring that the message of beach safety is being spread far and wide.
Angus’ pre-season begun earlier than most when he assisted with the running of the annual Northern NSW Lifeguard School. This Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) run program is recognised as a positive learning experience for aspiring Lifeguards with Angus continuing mentoring many of these rookies throughout the season.
It was fortunate indeed for one woman that the Lifeguard was on hand during the final week of the contract at Salt Resort. He successfully performed CPR on a woman in an incident that attending paramedics described as “would without a doubt been fatal without his intervention.”
“It’s very rewarding. I put a lot of time and effort into my role as a Lifeguard and having role models like ALS Northern Coordinator, Scott McCartney and fellow Cudgen Headland member, Jarrod Cain is amazing,” Angus Macphail said.
“I strive to be the best Lifeguard I can be, obtaining more awards and also be as fit as possible for my time on the beach and racing with Cudgen Headland.”
He was also called upon to attend several emergency call outs and made several rescues while on patrol throughout the season.
Angus is also a strong competitor with his club Cudgen and is a well-liked member of his team.
His commitment to Lifeguarding and professionalism means that he is a worthy winner of Lifeguard of the Year.
