Tweed Lifeguards Return For Summer Patrol

Lifeguards from the Australian Lifeguard Service (ALS) based in the Tweed Shire are gearing up for bumper summer season with thousands expected to hit the picturesque Northern NSW region.

The well trained lifeguards are equipped to respond to any emergency situation and will be working hard to keep everyone safe during the summer season.

Lifeguards resume patrols at Dunburrah/Flagstaff, Casuarina, Hastings and North and South Pottsville on Saturday 19 September with additional patrols at other locations including Fingal, Cudgen/Kingscliff, and Cabarita beginning on Monday 21 December.

Patrols started back at North Kingscliff earlier this week. Most patrols are 5-days-a-week although a number of locations have been contracted for seven.

In addition volunteer lifesavers will be patrolling weekends and public holidays ensuring that there will be plenty of eyes on the surf and sand of the Tweed throughout the summer.

ALS NSW Manager Brent Manieri said lifeguards are looking forward to resuming their patrol duties after performing strongly in their annual proficiency tests.

“We are at the stage of the season now where all the testing is complete and everyone is just really looking forward to putting their skills into practice.

“This year we will be continuing to emphasise preventative actions on the part of our lifeguards to ensure that potentially dangerous situations are dealt with before they escalate. This could include such actions as encouraging swimmers to swim between the flags and identifying hazards that could impact on beachgoers safety,” Mr Manieri said.

He also praised Tweed Council for their commitment to the safety of all beach goers in the area.

“Our focus, like Council, is ensuring the safety of all beach goers in the area, and we look forward to continuing our strong relationship with Council and delivering a high level of service to both locals and tourists who visit the Tweed’s beaches.”
